Max Planck (1858-1947) was a German theoretical physicist who originated quantum theory through his analysis of blackbody radiation.
Quantum hypothesis
In 1900 Planck introduced discrete energy elements to derive the blackbody radiation law. The constant now called the Planck constant became a central scale in quantum physics.
Planck's work did not immediately create modern quantum mechanics, but it opened the route to the light quantum, atomic energy levels, and the later mathematical theory of quantum states.
